Isshaq Ismail

Ghanaian artist Isshaq Ismail explores traditional draftsmanship with figure painting developing unique grotesque images on recycled carton boxes. The material which would have gotten into the end of its industrial process is recycled by the artist as support for intriguing painting projects often inspired by societal constructs and issues. Among his many projects include series of works done in irony of the imposed state required for formal passport photography. Other projects express the unique barbering style art often found on barbering shop or kiosk across urban Ghana. Isshaq trained at the Ghanatta College of Art and Design. His consistent practice has earned him many exhibitions in Ghana whilst being shortlisted for awards including the Kuenheyia Prize (Ghana) and the Barclays L’Atelier (South Africa).
